[For a moment, Quatre assumes the man won't take his hand and considers dropping it (it's behavior he's grown accustomed to, after all), but his smile widens when he's proved wrong.]

[gives a sincere nod and studies the gathering once again] The people of the community are very interesting. I've never met such a diverse group.

[gives a mocking snort under his breath.] That’s an exceptionally polite way of putting it.

[seems genuinely surprised as he turns back to Edgeworth] Sorry...?

[samuraiprosecutor]

[is surprised by his surprise. Considering how people frequently behave at these events, it seems almost unusual for the boy not to have run into someone unsavory by now.] I take it you haven’t had any unpleasant encounters yet?

[Young Mr. Winner may be able to catch the subtle emphasis he puts on that last word.]

[Young Mr. Winner does, indeed, catch it; it seems to him that Mr. Edgeworth has had far too many unpleasant encounters]

[frowns slightly] What do you mean?

[samuraiprosecutor]

[He shrugs with a deceptive nonchalance.] A sizable portion of the community’s userbase is suffering from a dearth of manners. It becomes especially noticeable when we’re forced to interact in person. If you haven’t seen any evidence of that yet, you should consider yourself lucky.

[stares at Edgeworth for a moment, then smiles again, chuckling lightly]

In that case, I thank you for the warning, Mr. Edgeworth. I'll be on the lookout.

[samuraiprosecutor]

[it seems pretty clear the boy doesn’t believe him, but the warning has been given. Anything that happens from that point on is out of his hands. He certainly won’t be keeping a watchful eye on Winner for most of the night. Not at all.] Fortunately the worst offenders tend to be easy to spot—or occasionally hear—from a distance. And members of the criminal element usually limit themselves to relatively harmless behavior at these events.

[It's not that Quatre doesn't believe the older man; it's simply that he's not unused to a rowdy crowd, and the fact that Mr. Edgeworth seems disgruntled over a lack of manners strikes him as amusing and somewhat endearing.

Edgeworth's words give Quatre pause, however, and his smile fades.]

Criminal element? [brows knit together, he surveys the crowd]

[gives a soft affirmative hum.] There's at least as many hero types around, so the thieves and killers generally show enough restraint to keep themselves safe from retaliation.

[seems concerned, but the look is soon replaced by something akin to disappointment]

I shouldn't be surprised, I suppose...

[not quite the response Edgeworth was expecting...at least not from someone so young. he cocks an eyebrow at the boy.]

You shouldn't, but you can hardly be faulted for it. Few people expect to find themselves associating with criminals unless something--such as suspicious behavior or an unsavory location--serves to put the idea in their mind.
